The Seng Samla Shella (SSS) has written to the director of Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd (LUMPL) requesting essential aid under the corporate social responsibility scheme of LUMPL.
In a letter, the SSS said that some villagers in Shell are unable to make a living during the lockdown imposed to curb the Covid-19 second wave.
It pointed out that closure of the international borders, trade restrictions and containment measures have been preventing people from getting access to the markets, including buying inputs and selling their produce.
LUMPL has a limestone mining lease for areas that also cover the Shella Confederacy.
The youth body’s president and general secretary, Kitboklang Shnongwan and Manbhabok Swett, requested the company to bear all the medical expenses, treatment bills for coronavirus patients and to also provide essential commodities to all the Shella villagers, especially those who are in containment areas. They also asked for financial aid in setting up a community isolation centre, medical equipment and other items.
