Meghalaya today became only the second state in the North East to record more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day.
The other state, which has consistently recorded higher rates than this, is regional giant Assam. Tripura has come close, with 879 infections logged recently, but has yet to cross one thousand.
All eight North East states are currently in the grip of the second wave of the pandemic.
Earlier this month Meghalaya overtook Arunachal Pradesh in the tally of total Covid-19 infections and is now fourth-highest in the North East for coronavirus infections, behind Manipur by around 15,000. It is also fourth-highest in the region for Covid-related deaths, behind Tripura by less than 100.
