The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate passed an order today forcing all shops to close in the Laitumkhrah area after members of the public were found to be flouting Covid-19 protocols.
In the order, Isawanda Laloo, said that the Incident Commander had reported numerous incidents of non-compliance, including the overcrowding of shops, non-use of facemasks, lack of physical distancing, movement of vehicles without passes and movement of the public between neighbourhoods.
“This laxity is a cause of concern in view of the ongoing fast spread of Covid-19,” the DC said and, therefore, she exercised her powers under the law to order that all shops in Laitumkhrah, including in the market area and street vendors, shall remain closed until further orders.
