The leaders of Ka Sur U Paidbah Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (KSUP) today met farmers of the Pynthorumkhrah area who have bemoaned the lack of markets for their vegetables owing to the ongoing lockdown.
The KSUP has thus demanded that the Agriculture Department, through its 1917iTEAMS initiative, buy up produce from the state’s farmers at a minimum support price.
It also wants the government to waive half of the farmers’ Kisan Credit Card loans and other debts they might have incurred since the start of the pandemic in the last financial year.
“The government should also open temporary markets in every available space that will pave way for the farmers to sell their produce, especially perishable items like vegetables, which will also prevent overcrowding in this situation,” Egenstar Kurkalang, KSUP secretary told reporters after meeting the farmers.
He also called for the government to create greater awareness among agriculturists on the many central government schemes set up to help farmers.
