The State BJP will meet Governor Satya Pal Malik here tomorrow to demand a stay on the formation of the new executive committee led by NPP in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
According to sources, a delegation of BJP to be led by State party president Ernest Mawrie will request the Governor not to approve the formation of the executive committee in GHADC.
It may be noted that NPP, GNC and three independents have formed the Garo Hills Democratic Coalition (GHDC) comprising of 15 MDCs in the 30-member council.
BJP has said that that the NPP’s claim of having a majority to form the executive committee in GHADC is wrong.
“15 is not the magic number in the district council because the court has passed an order in 2000 in the case of Edmund Sangma and Winson Sangma that the minimum majority for forming the executive committee should be 17,” newly elected BJP MDC and party vice president Bernard Marak said yesterday.
According to Marak, if a party or a coalition has 15 MDCs, one of them will be the Chairman.
“In the 29-member House if one is a chairman then it’s a tie and it will be 14 each (on either side). Therefore, the court has given a verdict that it should be 17 members,” the Tura MDC said.
Marak also alleged that the Governor has been misled by the leaders of NPP that with 15 MDCs they can form the executive committee.
The latest development comes after Chief Minister Conrad Sangma led a delegation of 11 NPP MDCs, three independents and the lone GNC councillor, Nikman Marak to the Governor yesterday to stake claim to the formation of the new executive committee.
BJP which is strongly opposed to the alleged misgovernance and misuse of funds under the previous GHADC executive committee led by NPP also said that it would continue to raise its voice against all such corrupt activities.
