The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Laban Circle has alleged that migrant workers have managed to enter the State without following the mandatory Standard Operating Protocol set by the government.
The KSU detained 11 labourers last night around 10 pm at Rhino Point and claimed that the labourers did not posses any valid documents except for the phone number of the contractor who hired them for employment.
KSU circle publicity secretary, Johney Rapthap in a statement to the media on Saturday said that the labourers entered Meghalaya in violation of the Covid-19 protocols and the curfew order imposed by the East Khasi Hills district administration preventing movement from 10 pm.
While the people of the State are barred from free movement in markets, religious institutions, school, etc, the Rapthap said people from outside the state could easily enter that too without following the mandatory protocols and without valid documents.
The KSU has also lodged a FIR against the district administration for allowing entry of people without Covid tests and the contractor for not registering the labourers in the Meghalaya portal.
“These kinds of reckless activities will contribute to the rise of the Covid-19 cases putting people at risk,” Rapthap said.
Meanwhile, the KSU unit in Lumshnong under East Jaiñtia Hills district also pushed back a number of labourers who had reached Star Cement Company on Friday night.
KSU unit president, Olanbat Pdang stated that the workers had no labour licence and that the contractor who had employed them refused to meet them. “Therefore we sent them back in the same vehicle bearing Assam registration,” he added.
