The Meghalaya government has reimposed restrictions on the number of people who can gather together in public to try and keep Covid-19 numbers from rising too high.
In an order passed today, Chief Secretary MS Rao said that Covid protocols were not being followed strictly by members of the public and such complacency, if allowed to continue, could lead to a surge in coronavirus cases in the state.
As a result, the number of people in places of worship, cinemas, outdoor sports events and religious/social/private gatherings will be capped at 50 percent. In addition, all shops, restaurants and bars in the Shillong agglomeration must close by 9pm.
After dwindling to almost zero, active Covid-19 cases in Meghalaya now stand at 270, with 215 of these in East Khasi Hills alone. Yesterday 87 new infections in the state were reported, the highest single day figure in 2021.
Deputy Commissioners and the police were tasked with checking that such rules are adhered to and impose fines on violators.
