Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui today said that if children have been detained by their schools despite the government’s directive not to hold back students, the aggrieved parents should complain to the department.
Parents should approach the District School Education Officer or Sub-divisional SEO, as applicable.
In its notification on March 26, the department declared that failed students will not be detained, except those in Classes 10 and 12 who appeared for their board exams. However, opposition MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh later claimed that several schools were going against this directive by holding back students in Class 7 or 8. According to the minister, detaining children is against the Right to Education Act and also the recent notification of the state government.
