Two men from East Jaintia Hills were arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on suspicion of entering the neighbouring country illegally and being in possession of firearms, it was learnt today.
The case was reported in Bangladesh newspapers on Friday but today the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh, informed that the duo – identified as Taw Mukhim (65) and Brasil Lamin (49) – from Borsora were part of a 20-member group that crossed the border to go hunting.
They were apprehended by the BGB in the Lovachhara area of Kanaighat upazila on Wednesday.
The Dhaka Tribune quoted BGB Lovachhara camp commander Saiful Khanas as saying that the duo were “equipped with firearms and sharp weapons”. Three locally-made guns, ammunition and “sharp weapons” were seized from their possession.
While these two were arrested, the BGB said that the others in their party managed to flee back into India.
Mukhim and Laming have been charged with entering Bangladesh illegally and possessing illegal weapons.
Singh said that neither the BGB nor Bangladesh police had informed the Indian authorities about the duo’s arrest until approached today.
