Two separate public rallies against the Golf Links assault was organised in Umdohlun and Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills district today by different pressure groups.
The protest rally was to condemn the assault that led to the death of a 20-year old youth, Phershanroy Marthong of Wahkaji village allegedly by a group of 20 people in Golf Links, Shillong on March 21. The youth succumbed to his injuries a week after the assault.
A Special Investigation Team has been constituted by Meghalaya police to delve into the case that has sparked debate on who perpetrated the crime. While police has confirmed that there is no communal angle into the incident, pressure groups have accused police of not being proactive in finding the assaulters who they claimed are not from the community.
At Umdohlun, the protest rally was organised by the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC), Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), Kur Marthong, Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS) Warsanlyngdoh and others.
In Mawkyrwat, the Khasi Students Union spearheaded the rally in collaboration with the FKJGP, HANM, Synjuk Seng Samla Shnong (SSSS), Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA), Seng Samla Hima Langrin (SSHL), Synjuk Nongshong Shnong Phlangdiloin Area (SNSPA), HUNM, UHM, TULBA and Seng Kynthei Sawsymper Circle.
