The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the Umoid attack in South West Khasi Hills last month, which resulted in the death of a labourer from Assam and injuries to several others, which was carried out by masked men.
The commission has sent a notice to Chief Secretary MS Rao to have the matter enquired into and to submit a report to the commission on the actions/steps taken by the government to apprehend the miscreants.
The MHRC has also asked the government to explain the measures proposed to be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future and the quantum of interim relief proposed to be granted to the deceased and the injured persons in that tragic incident.
