Congress leader, Dr. Mukul Sangma has said that any government will be hesitant to take a bold decision on the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute and reiterated “strong political will” as a solution to the vexed issue.
“Any contentious issues can be somehow misinterpreted and misused by anybody in order to take political mileage,” Dr. Sangma said. He said that it is for this reason, as both Assam and Meghalaya moved on with the discussion, it slowed down and there is complete dormancy of discussion.
“Then you revive, you restore the discussion and then a new incumbent government comes and new people which lead the government,” he added.
The leader of opposition said that when elections are near one cannot rule out desperados to politicise this issue and whip up sentiments.
Dr. Sangma also said that one needs an in-depth understanding about the actual genesis and core issues relating to this area of difference and then only one would be arrived at mutually acceptable solutions by people from both sides so that no political party can create controversy out of the solution.
He said that any decision pertaining to resolution to areas of differences with Assam must be something which is acceptable to all people across community and party lines.
“There should be hardly any place for politicisation of this issue once it is decided upon. Therefore taking everybody on board at the time of engagement and discussion is very crucial,” he added.
