Assembly Speaker and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh today said that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government is keen to create new districts to bring the administration closer to the people.
With regards to his own constituency, Lyngdoh said that Mairang civil subdivision deserves to be upgraded to a district.
“We have been pursuing this matter for a long time and I could see that this time we have to ensure that the new districts are created at the earliest,” Lyngdoh stated.
When asked if the state government can afford to create new districts when it is facing a financial crunch, he said that he understands the situation but feels sure the government will be able to take care of the funding.
The new Mairang district will incorporate Mairang and Mawthadraishan Assembly constituencies, which are currently in West Khasi Hills.
“West Khasi Hills is a huge district, so the purpose of creating a new one is to bring the administration closer to the people of that area,” Lyngdoh added.
