The Congress Party has yet to make a decision on who to field for the vacant Mawryngkneng seat in the Assembly, state party leader Dr Mukul Sangma said today.
A by-election for this seat is necessary after the sitting Congress MLA, David Nongrum, passed away early this month.
Nongrum’s father, Congress veteran Charles Pyngrope, has made it clear that none of his family members are eager to contest the by-poll.
“Discussion is on, consultations are on and hopefully we will have a productive outcome,” Dr Sangma said.
When asked if a relative of Nongrum’s would have an advantage if they contested, he said, “Obviously yes, because we are dealing with human minds. It is a mind game at the end of the day. Keeping in mind all those aspects, consultations are on.”
Meanwhile, the former Chief Minister described the process of selecting candidates for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls as a tough job.
“We shortlisted the candidates based on the inputs we received from different constituencies. Fortunately we have been able to announce the list of the candidates,” Dr Sangma said, adding that there were plenty of willing candidates to choose from and that demonstrates the health of the party.
