Desperate for their pending salaries of two and a half years to be paid, the Non Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has threatened to cut off the supply of water to parts of Tura if their demands are not met by February 22.
The NGEA wrote to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today seeking redressal of their grievances. It comes after the NGEA took out a rally yesterday. Besides today’s threat, the association also said it will boycott the April 9 election to the GHADC if their demands are not met.
Besides 32 months worth of salaries, the NGEA also wants the release of Rs 55 crore that it says is due to the GHADC by the state government as royalties. The employees further demanded the utilization of Rs 18.20 crore of central government assistance for the clearance of their salaries while also seeking the transfer of the present GHADC Secretary, Rikse Marak.
The NGEA also demanded the framing of finance rules to avoid irregular transactions in the GHADC before the upcoming election. Lastly, they demanded the framing of service rules for the council in order to avoid illegal appointments.
“If the above demands are not met, we will have no other option than to boycott our duties as well as boycott the upcoming election,” said NGEA President, Senora Johny Arengh.
The NGEA also threatened to stop the supply of water to Tura, some parts of which are serviced by the GHADC.
