The United Democratic Party (UDP) held a public meeting yesterday at Baghmara, South Garo Hills, to launch its campaign for the forthcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
Top leaders of the UDP, including its president Metbah Lyngdoh, cabinet minister Kyrmen Shylla, MLA Samuel Sangma, vice-president Allantry Dkhar, general secretary Jemino Mawthoh, adviser Beninstand G. Momin, working president L C Momin, women’s wing president Pretty Kharpyngrope were present on the occasion.
The gathering witnessed the announcement of the first list of UDP candidates – Diana N Marak for Wagesik, Jadush M Sangma for Ringrikimgre and Devier M Sangma for Gasuapara.
All of the speakers spoke on the need to elect quality leaders to bring about much-needed change in the governance and administration of the GHADC, which has come under serious criticism from different quarters on the way it functions and on alleged corruption.
The speakers also reminded the people that the UDP, an offshoot of the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), which spearheaded the movement that led to Meghalaya statehood, will once again make the effort to bridge the gap between the different major tribes of the state and try to articulate the dreams and aspirations of the indigenous people.
