A retaining wall along the Shillong-Nongstoiñ bypass in Sohiong continues to be in a precarious condition with possible threats of total collapse.
Expressing concern that authorities have left the wall unrepaired the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC), Sohïong Circle who visited the area said there are evident signs of the retaining wall in immediate danger of falling off completely thereby posing a threat to commuters.
“We are surprised that the PWD department and the government are still sitting idly since last summer with no effort to repair it,” circle president Purningstar Shabong said.
Calling for immediate repair of the retaining wall, Shabong said that if there are issues why the retaining wall cannot be repaired, the government has to sort out immediately for the safety of the people.
It may be mentioned that social activist, Agnes Kharshiing had filed a FIR against shoddy construction work of the retaining wall at the Mawngap police station. In the FIR, she said that the poor construction attracts charges of “corruption, misuse of public funds and cheating the people.”
Kharshiing had urged authorities to investigate and book contractors responsible for the construction as per law.
