MLA from Mawryngkneng constituency, David Nongrum passed away Tuesday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 42.
Nongrum was declared brought dead to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) at around 9 am. His blood pressure has been high and he had been meaning to go for a check-up a day earlier, according to hospital sources.
Nongrum, a two-time MLA from Mawryngkneng, was the son of veteran Congress leader and former Meghalaya speaker Charles Pyngrope.
David Nongrum was first elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2013 as an independent candidate. Later, David Nongrum joined the Congress in 2018 and managed to win from the Mawryngkneng constituency.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma condoled the demise of the legislator. “Extremely saddened by the sudden demise of Sh. David Nongrum, Hon’ble MLA from Meghalaya. He was a young, dynamic and vocal leader who executed an impactful tenure. My heartfelt condolences to the family in this hour of grief. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.
The Congress has expressed its shock and grief at the sudden death of party legislator. In an emergency meeting held at the party’s office here chaired by party’s working president James S. Lyngdoh, the Congress expressed shock and sadness at the sudden demise of Nongrum.
The meeting also recalled his immense contributions to the party, the constituency and the State in his short but illustrious life.
“The party has lost a bright shining star in his young age and felt that no words would be enough to describe his sudden demise. The void caused by his demise would be difficult to fill,” the Congress said.
After observing a two-minute silence to pay respect to the departed party MLA, the meeting also conveyed its condolence to late Nongrum’s wife Kikatula Jamir, his two children and his father Charles Pyngrope who is also the party’s legislator from Nongthymmai constituency.
