Although the state government has received the report commissioned from North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), it is still waiting for the findings of the IIT Guwahati investigation into the supposed high levels of radiation at Nongbah Jynrin, South West Khasi Hills.
The NEHU inquiry found that radiation levels at the uranium waste storage tanks in the village are within acceptable limits. The university, however, found elevated levels of radiation at a nearby stream, the Phud Syngkai.
“We have announced that the report received from the NEHU has found that the radiation there is within acceptable limits and now we are awaiting the report from the IIT,” Tynsong told reporters today.
He maintained that both NEHU and IIT Guwahati are the best institutions in the North East and have all the expertise and scientists who can arrive at the facts.
With regards to the findings on the stream, the Deputy CM said that this is a new issue and the government cannot make any comment on this now but will first wait for the report from IIT.
Meanwhile, with regards to the Lukha River turning a bright blue colour, Tynsong said that the government has instructed the pollution control board to take care of the matter and test the river water.
