Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is confident that the border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam will be resolved after Union Home Minister Amit Shah made mention of the subject in his address to the North Eastern Council plenary session in Shillong last Saturday.
Today Tynsong said that he had never before heard a Union Home Minister make a statement on the unresolved border disputes between the various North East states.
On January 23, Shah underscored that the North East states should resolve the boundary disputes among themselves and urged chief ministers in the region resolve the boundary disputes amicably at “state to state” talks.
“He did clearly mention this. It proves the Centre has equal concern on the long pending (boundary) issue,” Tynsong told reporters, adding that the comment by Shah has “broken the ice”.
“I am sure we will be able to reach the destination (of securing an agreement),” the Deputy CM said.
However, as Assam will conduct state elections this year any dialogue to resolve the border dispute will have to be held after a new government takes over there, he added.
