The Congress will aim not just to be the biggest party following the 2023 Assembly elections but one with a two-thirds majority in the 60-member house.
“Our aim will not be the single largest party, but to cross the two-thirds majority,” All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Meghalaya Manish Chatrath told reporters today.
He also said that the party’s MLAs, MDCs, office bearers and members all stand united and he does not see any reason to feel that there could be defections to other political outfits.
“We are definitely in a very good position and we will be forming the government,” Chatrath stated. “As in-charge of the state my duty is to ensure that nobody leaves and I will try to ensure that to the best of my ability. Those who had to leave have already left and those who are in the party are definitely going to stay in the party,” the AICC in-charge said.
He also informed that the assessment he has received from Congress leaders in the state is that the public are fed up with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government because, he said, it has failed to fulfill what it promised and has been tarnished by issues like that of illegal coal mining.
“It is for the people to decide and they will decide through the elections and we are quite confident the state is waiting for change,” he added.
