Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS), Laitkor will be converted to a Sports School from January 4 for training in athletics, archery and fencing.
A statement from the Assam Rifles here today informed that the school will be known as ARPS (Sports) that would have 50 boys and 50 girls students selected by Sports Authority of India (SAI) who will be coached and trained by the personnel of SAI.
ARPS, Laitkor will become the first such school of its kind in the North East.
Assam Rifles and SAI are signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for initially inducting 100 students with proven/ potential talent in athletics, archery and fencing, the statement said, adding that all expenditure on academics and training of the students will be sponsored by SAI under the Khelo India scheme of the Government of India.
The school will be in line with the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai Sonipat, Haryana.
The inaugural function of the sports school is scheduled on January 4.
