The report of the study conducted by North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) into the alleged radiation leaks from uranium effluent tanks at Nongbah-Jynrin village in South West Khasi Hills will be submitted by the end of this month.
IIT Guwahati, which was also tasked with investigating the matter by the state government, will only start its study in the New Year.
“We will know the outcome of NEHU’s report very soon,” Chief Secretary MS Rao said today.
In October the state government asked NEHU and IIT Guwahati to carry out an in-depth study into the reports of leaks from the concrete tanks at Nongbah-Jynrin.
When asked why there was a delay on the part of IIT Guwahati to start their investigation, the Chief Secretary said that the institution has its own commitments.
Several political figures and activists have visited the site and reached their own conclusions, but Rao cautioned that these were not expert analyses.
“We trust these institutions since they are institutes of national repute falling under the government of India,” he said.
