The heavy traffic jam in Shillong, especially at Mawlai Petrol Pump, has put commuters in great difficulty, especially those traveling to Ri-Bhoi and Assam.
In this respect, Mawlai MLA Process T Sawkmie has written to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to suggest making the Mawlai bypass a two-way road to ease traffic congestion.
Sawkmie said that the plying of heavy trucks through Shillong, because of rerouting away from the Shillong Bypass due to the bad state of the Dwar Ksuid bridge, has also added to the traffic congestion in the city.
He opined that the Mawlai bypass was constructed to ease traffic congestion but restricting it to a one-way road has not helped.
Sawkmie stated that even with the odd-even rule to limit cars on the road during the Covid-19 pandemic, there is extreme traffic at Mawlai pump, which will become worse if the rule is removed and all vehicles are allowed to ply.
