The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is “exceeding people’s expectations” while the opposition Congress is doing nothing more than indulging in a “blame game and petty politics”, the National People’s Party (NPP) said today.
This was said by the Shillong city President of the NPP, Anthony Nongbri, in response to attacks on the government by leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma.
“Why else will a party leader continue to invest his precious time in blame game and petty politics when he can use this time to serve the people of his constituency or for that matter constructively critique the government? Moreover, why is it that these confusions dwell only within Dr Sangma’s head time and again? Seems like a case of an idle mind being a devil’s workshop,” Nongbri said.
On the demand of the opposition to recall the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (Amendment) Bill 2020, the NPP said that the revised MRSSA will put a check on the influx of illegal migrants in the state and will ensure that there is adequate protection of the indigenous communities.
“The MRSSA in its current form is more robust and substantial unlike during the Congress regime where it was toothless and vague. The MRSSA passed by Dr Mukul’s government was just an instrument to play with people’s emotions to earn petty vote banks,” he added.
On the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the NPP said that the previous Congress government had blatantly ignored the recommendations of a high-level committee constituted in 2012, which recommended ILP in the state.
“The committee collectively recommended ILP. The Congress outrightly rejected the recommendations and did nothing. Bindo Lanong (of the United Democratic Party), the then Deputy Chief Minister, criticised the government and its inaction as well and stated that the constitution of the committee was a waste, since Congress refused to take action,” Nongbri said.
