The state government today announced that roving carolers will not be allowed to spread a little Christmas cheer this year on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, caroling at fixed premises, like churches, will be permitted.
Like in places around the world with a Christian tradition, Meghalaya sees plenty of carolers going from house to house every Christmas singing hymns and carols around towns and villages.
“Caroling outside, in the street or in any locality, is not allowed,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said after a review meeting for protocols for the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Community feasts, popular in some areas, will also not be allowed this Christmas and New Year, in order to forestall the possible spread of the coronavirus.
