Congress legislator, Charles Pyngrope today stated that as per norms, resolution adopted by a Legislative Assembly should be accepted by the Government of India.
“A resolution in the house was passed by all the 60 MLAs last December and was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for their consideration to implement Inner Line Permit. Therefore the Government of India should accept this because the State Assembly will know better about this than the others,” he told Highland Post.
Stating that the Centre should have speed up the matter, Pyngrope said it could also intimate the Chief Minister whether it needs to be re-discussed.
Pyngrope also chose to disagree that the Central government is undermining Meghalaya but said, “Probably they may have their assessment on this but I think they should speed up the matter.”
Pointing out that while power to implement the ILP rests with the Centre, Pyngrope said, “We have to ask the center to empower us to implement ILP and if there are any reservations we have to find the way and means to remove or rectify the hindrance for its smooth implementation.”
The Congress leader also said that ILP will not affect tourism in the State because people who possess valid documents are not barred from entering.
“In this technological world everything can be done online and if the people who want to come to the state provides the documents as per the norms or criterion laid down by the State government, just like Visa then ILP is not a problem at all,” he said adding that the only thing that matter is that it has to be put in place.
He also said that the Congress party will stand by the resolution it has given at the Assembly. “We are seeing MDA going to Delhi and I think dialogue is on because nothing can be done by force but only thorough dialogue,” he added.
