The Khasi Students Union (KSU) is opposed to the two recommendations made by the Assembly Committee on Environment to restrict entry to the uranium test mine pits and repository tanks and opening of a police outpost at Wahkaji.
On Monday, the Assembly Committee had placed its report and recommendations before the House during the Autumn Session following its recent study tour conducted at Domiasiat, Nongbah Jynrin and Wahkaji area.
The committee had recommended that the location of the three uranium test mine pits and two repository tanks may be declared as protected/restricted area where only authorized personnel may be allowed access.
However, the KSU South West Khasi Hills district today said that the recommendation is not acceptable. “If people are restricted to these areas then it would scuttle voices of the people and will give a leeway to officials the AMD and UCIL to do whatever they wished,” KSU district president Forwardman Nongrem said in a statement.
On setting up of a police outpost at Wahkaji and immediate posting of police personnel for securing the sensitive location, the KSU questioned the intention. “Can the police personnel arrest radiation or it is meant for protecting the UCIL and AMD to carry out their works there,” he questioned.
According to the KSU, Wahkaji is a peaceful place which the committee could have recommended sending police personnel to the border areas of the State.
