‘Public Service Bill good but Govt should act on pending teachers’ salaries’

The cabinet’s recent decision to table the Meghalaya Right to Public Service Bill in the upcoming session of the Assembly is a positive one but there should be some move from the government to encapsulate timely disbursement of teachers’ salaries in law, the President of the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) has said.

“The bill, if passed by the Assembly, will ensure timely response from the part of departments on issues concerning public importance,” KJDSTA president Babu Kular Khongjirem said.

However, he said that if the government is really concerned and really sincere on the provision of public services, it should first make this bill applicable to the long-pending issues of teachers, like the delays in disbursement of the salaries of deficit school teachers, which are released, he said, once in every three or four months.

Khongjirem said that the government should expedite with immediate effect these importance issues and take the initiative towards the dedicated and valuable services of teachers in the education of the children.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya cabinet on October 30 has approved a proposed legislation that will address the issue and punishing the erring officials.

According to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the Meghalaya Rights to Public Services Bill, 2020 will be tabled in the coming autumn session of the State Assembly which will begin on November 5.

Sangma said the objective of the bill is to ensure that a specific timeline is given for any kind of service that the government is providing to the people like caste certificate, driving license and others.
