Several pressure groups in the Damal Asim area of West Garo Hills have submitted a memorandum to Power Minister James PK Sangma to bring his attention to developmental needs of the region, which falls under the minister’s constituency.
The memo, which was signed jointly by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Garo Students Union (GSU) and other groups, was submitted yesterday.
The NGOs sought for the repair of the road between Damal Asim and the sub-divisional headquarters of Dadenggre.
“This is the main road used by the people of the area to move between these two places for necessary work in Dadenggre. It is in pathetic condition and is still being used for business as well as study purposes. The road requires immediate repair and we request that it is looked into at the earliest,” stated the memo.
Further, the organisations sought for the up-gradation of the Damal Asim Upper Primary School to a full-fledged government higher secondary school.
“As we lack school facilities in our own village, being the oldest UP school of Damal Asim, it deserves to be upgraded for the better interest of the students’ community as well as the general public of the area,” they added.
The NGOs also asked for the development of the Damal Asim Police Station with a new building. Currently the inspection bungalow is being used as a police station and this has led to the building not being occupied and cannot be used for common people of the region.
Lastly the NGOs demanded the formation of a community and rural development block in Damal Asim to bring the administration closer to the people of the area.
