The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has demanded that the state government take penal action against five individuals who made allegations that the non-tribal Hindu population in the state is being persecuted.
KHNAM Vice-President Thomas Passah told Highland Post today that the five – Vicky Dey, Prantush Sarkar, Mridul Das, Binayak Roy and Chandan Chatterjee – have been trying to mislead the Meghalaya Governor, Prime Minister and general public by slandering the indigenous people of Meghalaya, the government, district councils and police.
Passah said that pressure groups have been forced to take the lead against the individuals because other political parties have remained silent on the matter.
“We demand the state government immediately initiate legal action against these individuals under IPC 152A and IPC 505 for making statements, speeches or acts which have the effect of disturbing public tranquility or law and order by promoting enmity or creating fear or alarm between classes of people on basis of difference in religion, caste, language or place of birth,” Passah said.
He said these individuals have tried to depict the Khasi community and the state as violent, which could have a negative impact on Meghalaya and its people, including internal harmony.
“Why are the political parties and legislators quiet on the issue? Are they playing the vote bank card? If the government and the legislators remain silent, the situation will turn worse, so we, therefore, demand that immediate and swift action should be taken against these individuals,” he said.
