The Hynñiewtrep People’s Front (HPF) and Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP)have demanded that the state government take steps to fix the Dwarksuid Bridge in Umiam, situated on the Shillong Bypass, which has developed cracks.
Recently a resident of Syllei-u-lar village, KrondingNongbsap, filed a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner on the condition of the bridge.
Today, members of the HPF and FKJGP, accompanied by local residents and officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), inspected the bridge and found cracks developing on the bridge’s supporting pillars.
Although the bridge was constructed only in 2009, the sheer number of heavy vehicles plying on it daily could have caused the cracks, HPF district President Apborlang Nongrum said.
