A mother and her minor daughter drowned after their wooden boat capsized in the Umngot River in West Jaintia Hills today morning. Two others in the same boat managed to escape.
According to police, the tragic incident occurred when the mother and her three daughters went fishing near Shnongpdeng village.
“Julias Lymba and her eight-year-old daughter Tariang Lymba were swept away by the high current while Jill Swer (17) and Isynei Lymba (23) managed to swim to safety,” Superintendent of Police Bikram D Marak said.
As per latest reports, the mother-daughter duo remains untraced.
“The search and rescue team has been making all efforts to retrieve the mother and her minor daughter. We have suspended the search operation due to darkness and will resume again tomorrow,” Marak said.
