Ampati, Sep 17 : Eighteen villages were affected in Rerapara block under South West Garo Hills district, due to incessant rainfall from last night that continued till today morning.
While no loss of life was reported, many houses were submerged and people have move to school buildings to seek shelter.
As relief work has begun for those affected by the flash flood, Congress leader Zenith Sangma today visited the flood affected areas and called for necessary relief operations.
Sangma said that some villages, with more than 100 households, had been totally submerged. This has forced residents to make for higher ground, with many now scraping a makeshift existence on the roadsides.
“We have contacted the district administration to carry out necessary relief operations and the PHE (Public Health Engineering Department) is providing water supply by sending tankers from time to time,” he added.
