Shillong, Oct 26: Days after walking out on bail, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leaders met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday and flagged alleged irregularities in NEIGRIHMS recruitment, demand for scrapping Shree Cement public hearing and delay in MRSSA implementation.
KSU president Raymond Kharjana, general secretary Reuben Najiar and others met Sangma at the State Guest House. Kharjana and Najiar were arrested on the night of August 19, hours after a bike rally that turned violent.
“The Chief Minister said he will meet the Union Health Minister in a few days on NEIGRIHMS issues,” Najiar told reporters after the meeting.
Najiar said the Union demanded scrapping of the public hearing of Shree Cement and alleged it was held with malafide intent. He said the fact-finding committee should visit Jaintia Hills instead of summoning villagers to Shillong.
“Many are from poor background. The committee must go to the ground to see how people are losing land to big corporations,” he said.
On MRSSA, Najiar said implementation is still pending and the government is yet to prepare the final DPR.
On government recruitment, he welcomed the decision to scrap personal interviews for Group C posts from January 1, 2027, but alleged corruption in recent contractual staff nurse appointments.
“There is proof that candidates had to pay money to get appointed. Without systemic reform, such practices will continue,” he alleged.
Sangma, in a post on X, said the meeting discussed NEIGRIHMS recruitment concerns, facilitation centres and MRSSA procedures.
“We will continue to engage in constructive dialogue to address concerns and work towards solutions that protect the interests of our people,” Sangma said.
