Shillong, Oct 16: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), East Jaintia Hills district unit, has raised concerns over alleged contradictions in Shree Cement’s environmental impact assessment (EIA) and sought protection for caves and monoliths in the district during a hearing before the government-appointed fact-finding committee.
KSU East Jaintia Hills assistant secretary Pynshaikupar Dkhar said the union made a presentation highlighting three key issues, including concerns over the project’s environmental impact and the vulnerability of caves near the proposed mining operations.
The union identified Krem Rngi, Krem Nohpyncha and Krem Kutsniang as sites requiring attention. It also sought protected or heritage status for Krem Kutsniang, which, according to local historical accounts cited by the union, was a hiding place for freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah during the uprising against the British in the 19th century.
The KSU also urged the committee and the government to consider protecting the monoliths at Lum Thangsyiem Moopatep in Tongseng village. It said safeguarding such sites could help promote tourism and generate livelihood opportunities for local residents.
Dkhar said the union’s submissions focused on environmental concerns and that the committee had recorded the points raised during the presentation.
