Editor,
The recent initiative of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) and the District Legal services Authority(DLSA) to prevent offences against children in collaboration with the state government is praiseworthy.
The newly launched initiative ‘Ka Jingkymen(Hope)’ is a welcome move. It will definitely help in sensitising children, parents, educators and local communities across the society about child safety.
Child safety in schools is important as it is an embodiment of trust. It is imperative that Gurus honor basic consideration of humanity and act as custodian of child rights rather than violators.
Children are our Nation’s most precious resource, but as children they often lack the skills to protect themselves. As parents, teachers and responsible citizens it is our moral duty to teach them the skills to be safe. Every home and school should teach children about safety and protection measures so that they can be assertive in order to protect themselves against abduction and exploitation.
Most importantly we must make our homes a place of trust and support that fulfill their needs. Together we can protect our children, who are the future of the Nation by teaching them to be smart, strong and safe.
Let’s hope that the new initiative will strengthen child protection mechanism under POSCO Act, 2012. At the same time there is utmost necessary for coordinated efforts of all stakeholders to ensure effective outreach and community’s active participation for creating mass child safety awareness especially against online risks and cyber-related offences.
