Shillong, Oct 7: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said the government is working to improve road connectivity to unconnected villages amid concerns over poor roads impacting access to healthcare.
Responding to whether poor connectivity and its impact on health services was taken up with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Shylla said the government is aware of the problem and road construction has been taken up.
“This is not only because we are waiting for an incident to happen. If you see from the time of statehood, in the last seven to eight years, we have taken up maximum construction of roads,” he said.
His remarks come after the death of a child at Domkyrkoh village in West Khasi Hills after the family reportedly faced difficulty reaching medical care due to poor roads.
Shylla said the government has several priority areas and cannot take up all projects at once.
“We cannot do everything at one go because we have so many priority areas to look after,” he said, adding the government is committed to ensuring all unconnected villages get proper connectivity.
