Shillong, Oct 2: The Lailad to Nongmensong market road in Shillong has not been blacktopped for over a month, causing severe inconvenience to commuters and residents.
Residents, shopkeepers, drivers and passersby have expressed anger over the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities. For the past one month, they have been suffering from dust when the weather is dry and slush when it rains.
Residents, especially school children who use the road daily, are bearing the brunt. Plenty of people passing through also have to use this route, as it is one of the prominent roads from the city to NEIGRIHMS, New Shillong and beyond.
The residents blamed the negligence of the contractor for the condition of the road. They said he should not have dug up the old road when he was not in a position to blacktop it immediately.
They alleged that the contractor has links with people in authority and has therefore acted unfairly and disrespectfully to the needs of the public, especially since the stretch is considered a VIP road.
They have also questioned why Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander Laloo Hek has not taken action on the issue.
Samla Seng Nongmensong leader Lasavi Nongsiej said the government and the authorities concerned should take immediate steps to blacktop the road.
Shopkeepers, vendors and drivers said the state government has turned a blind eye to the road which is used by hundreds of people daily.
