Shillong, Sep 30: Tura Medical College is still far from being operationalised as recruitment of teaching staff is well below prescribed norms.
The National Medical Commission has prescribed a strength of 97 teaching staff for an annual intake of 50 MBBS seats. However, despite three rounds of advertisements and consultations with local doctors, only 37 faculty could be “mapped” as of now.
Dr Joram Beda, Commissioner and Secretary in the Health and Family Welfare Department, held a review meeting on the status and operationalisation of the medical college with several other officials.
To ensure that the infrastructure created benefits the people of Garo Hills without delay, it was recommended that the 150-bed and 80-bed blocks under construction within the Tura Civil Hospital campus be completed and commissioned for patient care.
“This would also strengthen the bed capacity of Tura Civil Hospital as the teaching hospital,” a press release stated today.
