Shillong, Sep 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has accused Meghalaya Police of illegal extortion on the National Highway at Mawkhanu and Thangshalai under Mawryngkneng Police Station.
Acting on public complaints, a team led by KSU-CEC Education Secretary Alerick Kharjana conducted a spot check on Wednesday and shared video clips of the act with the media.
The footage, shared by KSU, purportedly shows policemen collecting Rs 200 to Rs 500 per truck from vehicles carrying goods, minerals and food items.
Questioning how junior personnel could operate day and night without backing, KSU alleged a nexus with senior police officials and asked whether East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, or even ministers were involved.
Terming it rampant corruption that fuels price rise of essentials, KSU demanded an independent probe, immediate removal of the SP and action against the DC, and said it will file a formal complaint in the coming days.
