Shillong, Sep 28: Michealsing Ramsiej took first place in the Mawkyrwat Great Marathon IV, which was held on Saturday.
A total of 330 participants took part in the event, which comprised a full marathon of 42km for men above 18 plus shorter races for women, girls and boys.
The race was organised by the Centre for Youth Development (CYD) Mawkyrwat with the support of the Tourism Department. The objective was to promote sports, health and fitness and encourage greater participation of young people in sporting activities across South West Khasi Hills.
There were 120 men in the above 18 category, 37 women above 18, 111 U-18 boys and 62 U-18 girls.
In the full marathon, Michealsing crossed the finish line in 2 hours 35 minutes to bag prize money of Rs 35,000. Jinesfulson Hoojon was second three minutes later (2:38) while Wonderful Paliar took third position (2:42). They were awarded Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.
The distance of the other races was not mentioned but the finishing time suggested that they were 10km races.
In the women’s above 18 years, Sangmir Teronpi finished in 49 minutes 54 seconds. Marqueenless Ramsiej (52:13) was second and Phidashisha Lyngdoh (54:10) third. Here the winner received Rs 15,000 the second-placed finisher Rs 10,000 and the third-placed runner Rs 5,000
In the girls’ U-18 category, Abbagraceful Nongkseh secured first (54:23), Lyntijingkyrmen Kharjahrin (54:40) was second and Serlibon Teronpi (55:09) third. And in the boy’s U-18 category Aiborlang Wanniang (42:23) came first, followed by Khrawkupar Puweiñ (43:12) and Bijoylang L Nonglait (43:26). The prize money in both the U-18 races was the same as the women’s event.
Special prizes were also presented to the youngest and oldest participants. Rifison Wanniang was recognised as the youngest male, while Saphibapynkmen L Mawnai was the youngest female. In the senior participants’ category, Swonding Wahlang was the oldest man and Kmoiñ Wahlang the oldest woman.
The chief guest was Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar.
