Shillong, Sep 24: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has strongly objected to the Ministry of Finance’s order to keep Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of the proposed nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30.
In a press release, CoMSO said while it acknowledges the government’s concern to maintain uninterrupted banking services, administrative convenience cannot override the religious and social realities of Meghalaya.
“Meghalaya has a predominantly Christian population and Sunday occupies a deeply significant place in the religious, family and community life of the people,” CoMSO General Secretary Balkarin Ch. Marak said.
He said for generations, Sunday has been observed as a day of worship, prayer, family fellowship and rest, and directing banking employees to work without any State-specific consultation deserves serious reconsideration.
“Meghalaya is not merely a geographical extension of a national administrative framework. It has its own distinct social, cultural and religious character which must be respected,” the organisation said.
CoMSO said it is not opposed to ensuring uninterrupted banking facilities but questioned why alternative arrangements could not be explored, such as extended banking hours before or after the strike period, strengthening ATM and digital services and making limited emergency arrangements.
It urged the Ministry of Finance, RBI, concerned banks and the Meghalaya Government to immediately examine the applicability of the decision and consider arrangements that respect Sunday observance.
“Future decisions having a direct bearing on religious and social practices of Meghalaya should be preceded by meaningful consultation with the State and stakeholders,” CoMSO said, warning that if authorities proceed without addressing concerns, it will be compelled to act in due course.
“We expect authorities to demonstrate sensitivity, not forcing Meghalaya to accept a one-size-fits-all approach,” it added.
