Shillong, Sep 23: NEHU Geography Professor Sunil Kumar De, outgoing President of International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG), undertook a scientific tour to Romania and Spain this September.
In Bucharest, Prof. De delivered an invited lecture on “Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in the Himalayan Region: The Recent Nepal Tragedy” at the Romanian Academy, attended by 40 scientists, emergency-response personnel and media.
In recognition of his contributions, the Romanian Academy conferred a Diploma of Honorary Membership on him.
The lecture was followed by a two-day field excursion across Transylvania and the Carpathians, including mud-volcano sites.
He delivered the opening keynote on permafrost recession at the Romanian Geomorphology Symposium in Cluj-Napoca on September 4, followed by a field visit to the abandoned Calimani Sulphur Mine.
In Spain, Prof. De visited Zaragoza University on September 9-10, with a field trip to Bardenas Reales – UNESCO Biosphere Reserve famous for badlands and the Castildetierra formation – and delivered a lecture for Masters and PhD students.
The tour boosted scientific ties between India and Europe in geomorphology, a press release said.
