Should India ban social media for children like Australia did? This question is now being discussed seriously in Delhi and in many state capitals. In December 2025 Australia became the first country in the world to stop children below the age of sixteen from using ten major platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, X, Reddit and Twitch. Under that law, companies that fail to take reasonable steps to block young users can face fines. It was a bold step and many countries are now watching how it works on the ground.

India cannot ignore this debate because the scale here is much larger. India has around 75 crore smartphones and 100 crore internet users. It is the biggest market in the world for both Meta and YouTube. At present there is no strict minimum age that is properly enforced for most platforms. The central government through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has already held several meetings with social media companies to discuss whether age verification is technically possible. At the state level also there is movement. Karnataka has proposed a restriction for children below sixteen, Andhra Pradesh is considering a curb for children below thirteen, and Goa is studying the Australian model. A private member bill has also been introduced in Parliament by TDP MP L S K Devarayalu to bar children below sixteen from social media.

Those who support a ban give strong reasons. The first reason is health and safety. Doctors, teachers and parents are worried about addiction, anxiety, depression, lack of sleep and the pressure to look perfect online. Cyberbullying is common and many teenage girls are badly affected. There is also the danger of online predators, fraud and child sexual abuse material. Supporters say what is a public health issue in Australia is a much bigger crisis in India because of the sheer number of young users. The Economic Survey of 2025-2026 has also warned about this problem. It linked compulsive screen use to poor marks in school, lower productivity and lower earnings in the future. It even suggested that children should be given basic phones or tablets meant only for education.

The second reason is about data. Supporters argue that Indian children are producing huge amounts of data for foreign platforms. This data is then used to train artificial intelligence systems and to show targeted advertisements, but the economic benefit goes abroad. In their view, a ban would protect both children and national interest.

A third reason is help for parents. Many parents find it very hard to say no when all friends are online. A clear law would shift the responsibility to the platforms and give parents legal support.

But there are also strong arguments against a complete ban. The biggest concern is privacy. To prove that a user is above 16, companies may ask everyone to upload an identity card or do a face scan. This would create huge databases of personal information which could be misused or leaked. Even in Australia, the law does not allow platforms to force users to give government IDs, which has made enforcement difficult. The second problem is that determined children will find ways around the rule. They can use a fake date of birth, borrow a parent’s account, or use a VPN. If enforcement is weak, the law will only look good on paper.

There is also a human side to this debate. For some children, especially those who feel lonely, unsafe at home, or different from others, online communities provide comfort and advice that they do not get offline. Taking that away suddenly could isolate them further. There is also the issue of inequality. Many poor students in India depend on YouTube and other platforms for free learning. A strict ban could hurt them more, while richer families would easily find workarounds. Child rights experts therefore suggest better digital education and safer design of apps instead of a total ban.

This is why the central government is reportedly not in favour of a full Australian style ban. Instead, it is considering a graded system with different rules for the 8-12, 12-16 and the 16-18 age groups. This could include time limits or limited features rather than a complete block. Such a balanced approach may protect small children the most while still allowing older teenagers to learn and express themselves. India certainly needs to act to keep its children safe online, but careful age wise rules may be more practical and fair than a straight ban.
