Shillong, Sep 12: A trip to Shillong turned costly — and sweaty — for young tourists from Uttar Pradesh.
After allegedly trashing a homestay in Laitumkhrah on July 11 for being denied extra beds and threatening the staff, the group found themselves not behind bars, but with brooms in hand.
The Meghalaya High Court gave them a second chance: say sorry, pay up Rs 2.06 lakh, cough up another Rs 25,000 each, and earn your forgiveness with six days of community service.
So since September 7, the two adult accused — both in their 20s and prepping for competitive exams — have been on an unlikely Shillong tour: three days serving at the Gurudwara, two days with Jiva Cares, and a day picking trash.
On Saturday, they were spotted at Urkaliar, not sightseeing, but cleaning the city with Operation Clean Up volunteers.
From damaging a homestay to cleaning a hillside, justice in Shillong came with a mop, a lesson, and a deadline — September 13.
