Shillong, Sep 12: Congress aspirant from Amongpara GHADC constituency Luckshwell M Sangma has alleged that a large number of secondary and higher secondary posts are lying vacant across Khasi Hills and Garo Hills but government data shows only a handful with imprecise details.
In a press release, Sangma claimed that the government has miscounted and failed to properly verify actual vacancies while vacant posts continue to be filled only on contractual basis.
“While recruitment to posts such as LDA and other posts is held regularly, recruitment in the Education Department remains inconsistent and stagnant, especially at the secondary and higher secondary levels,” he said.
He alleged that the government is focusing mainly on mass recruitment at lower primary level while educators have served at secondary and higher secondary levels on contractual basis for more than 10 years and are now approaching age limit waiting for regular appointment.
Sangma questioned why the government is downplaying the profession of secondary and higher secondary educators and said prioritising education appears merely a statement in manifesto while spending crores on festivals.
He also raised concern over the Structured Pay Framework (SPF) introduced in February 2026, stating that the Education Department communication on August 19, 2026 says appointments to fill vacancies in government and deficit schools up to 2027-28 will come under SPF, leaving educated unemployed youth wondering whether regular recruitment opportunities are disappearing.
Government must urgently verify and publish actual district-wise vacancies especially at secondary and higher secondary levels and ensure fair, transparent and time-bound recruitment, he demanded.
