Khliehriat, Sep 10: MDCs from East Jaintia Hills on Thursday directed all coke plant owners in the district to install pollution control measures and plant trees around their factories to check black smoke.
The directive was issued at a meeting held at East Side Inn Hotel, Khliehriat.
Speaking to reporters, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Executive Member of forest Hambertus Nongtdu said the MDCs are concerned as coke plants have come up close to villages and residents have been complaining of foul smell and smoke.
“The owners have assured to cooperate and follow guidelines issued by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, including installation of filters,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Tuber-Wapungshnong MDC and Deputy CEM Lasky Rymbai, Rymbai-Khliehriat MDC Violet Lyngdoh, Musniang-Rangad MDC Waidameshwa Siangshai, Sumer MDC Krison Langstang, Saipung MDC William Theite, Sutnga MDC Seibor Shadap, JHADC Range Forest Officer R. Syngkrem, East Jaintia Hills Coke Manufacturing Association president D. Swer, secretary V. Nongtdu and coke plant owners.
