Shillong, Sep 8: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) held a follow-up meeting with the state government today to take forward five key demands placed before the administration, with Chief Secretary Shakil P Ahammed leading the discussions.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, KSU assistant general secretary Pynshailang Rani said the union and the government went into detailed deliberations.

On the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) 2016, Rani said a joint inspection by government officials and KSU representatives will be conducted on Wednesday at the entry-exit point in Umling.

The KSU has been pressing for stricter enforcement of the MRSSA at all border check gates to regulate the influx of outsiders and ensure proper documentation.

Regarding the Meghalaya Migrant Workers Act 2020, Rani said the government has assured that a training programme for its officers will be held tomorrow to enable smoother and more systematic implementation of the law. The KSU has repeatedly flagged poor enforcement of the Act, which mandates registration and monitoring of migrant workers.

The union’s third major demand concerns the removal of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of East Jaintia Hills, along with officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) over the July 31 public hearing for the proposed Shree Cement project in East Jaintia Hills.

Rani said the KSU is leaving the matter to the fact-finding committee constituted by the state government to examine the matter and submit its recommendations.

Meanwhile, on the issue of recruitment in NEIGRIHMS, the KSU leader said that the state government should push New Delhi to ensure that locals get employment in the central government institute.

Rani said that the union was satisfied with the discussions, adding that the KSU will follow up on each and every assurance made by the government through its different departments.
