Shillong, Sep 2: Leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma today said that the August 30 incident where four alleged members of an inter-state gang were killed in an encounter with police in East Garo Hills is only the tip of the iceberg.
“The government has to look at the larger fallout of the inputs which are available with them. I have shared this (movement of armed individuals) on the floor of the house on a number of occasions, which is a matter of concern,” Dr Sangma told reporters.
Stating that there is no room for complacency, he said that things cannot be taken for granted and peace, which has been restored in the state after many years of militancy, must be sustained.
Asked if there is any possibility of an armed outfit again raising its head in the state, he said that the “triggering” factors must be looked into.
According to him there will be forces who will try to get the kind of people who will be willing to be part of their evil designs adding that this is nothing new to Meghalaya and the state has in the past been confronted with such challenges in the past and overcame them.
Dr Sangma said that the terrain, corridors in certain parts of the state are such that it has been used as training destinations by not only former militant outfits of Meghalaya but also those from the region.
“The state of Meghalaya remains vulnerable always. Therefore, there is no space for complacency nor can we take things for granted,” he added.
